The Origins of the Programme

  • The development of this training programme in Information management, Information services, Informatics, Web Development and Management of content, Knowledge Management and Knowledge Economy of the South African National Centre for Informatics, Knowledge Management and Knowledge Economy (CIKMKE) is part of the strategic vision of the centre that of creating skills and expertise of South Africans towards Knowledge Economy and the New Economy in South Africa.  CIKMKE is a section 21 company registered number: 2007/01735/08.
  • This programme has been developed by a team based on their experiences of working within informatics and knowledge management arena for at least 17 years. The programme draws from SAQA standards adopted and adapted by ISSETA SETTA an ICT accreditation Body of the most modules to be used. The programme has adopted the unit standards from the relevant SETA and is meeting the SAQA outcomes outlined for its unit standard.  The team has university degrees and doctoral degrees and have worked for the Medical Research Council of South Africa, universities in the US and  Government Departments.  The centre prides itself for this excellent Team of Educators and Lecturers who are striving towards making the centre to be the Centre of Excellence  Informatics, Knowledge Management and Knowledge Economy in the country.  
  • The team enjoys recognition of the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA), The South African Health Informatics Association (SAHIA) , South African
  • Computer Society and the British Computer Society.  

Recruitment and Entry Requirements

  • The programme will be offered in full or part time mode or short courses of 2- 3 days for non- National Certificate or National Diploma participants.
  • The short courses are available for government and private employees.
  • The programme will seek to recruit a group of students per term studying either full-time or part-time mode.
  • In addition an executive variant of the programme may be contracted to government departments on a cohort basis.
  • For National Deploma registration requirements is Matric (Grade 12) to post graduate degrees.
  • Students with no Matric (Grade 12) can apply for a course provided they have passed grade 9 to do a one year course to qualify for a National certificate.  
  • The course may be taken as post graduate Diploma that will take two full years and three years part-time, as well as one year as National Certificate.
  • Admission will be agreed within the Admission Criteria mentioned above.

Submission of qualifications (Matric and Degree, Diploma certificates) will be required for admission. For those without Matric reports showing that candidates have passed grade 9 have failed Matric will be needed for admission.

  • National Diploma
  • National Certificate
  • Certificate of Attendance for short courses
