This module introduces participants to the concept of Intellectual Trading and IP management which these are some of the key aspects of knowledge economy. Also it provides a broader understanding of issues surrounding Intellectual Property Management particularly in the public sector. The module explains the importance of using public IP in responding to the problems of the general public. It gives a wide understanding and guidelines regarding the role of various public institutions ( government, academic institutions, research and individuals) in managing IP and the establishment of IP Management offices in these institutions.
Objectives
- Introduce participants to the concept IP and IP Management
- Define and explain Patents and Patenting in protecting Public IP
- Develop an understanding of Technology and Product Licensing
- Identify Specific Strategies and Mechanisms to facilitate Innovation and IP management for the public sector

The world is moving rapidly towards knowledge economy. In some developed countries the concept is better understood by players. Even in South Africa some government strategies do refer to knowledge based economy. Generally people in South do not understand what this knowledge economy is all about. Individuals, academic institutions, organization, government, business industry and communities as players in
Knowledge economy must prepare them selves so that all of them are ready to compete and play in the knowledge economy. Therefore, academic institutions must provide human resources that will fit in the knowledge economy. Both public and private organizations and government must empower themselves through their employees and necessary structures and infrastructure to make South Africa competitive in the knowledge economy.
