Background summary
The South African National Center for Informatics, Knowledge Management and Knowledge Economy (SANCIKMKE) is established as an independent non profit organisation, established by the companies Act, 1973 (Act 61 of 1973) under section 21 of the Act. The purpose of the centre is to coordinate and manage information and knowledge of the country at a national level. The coordination and management of information and knowledge at a national level bring the awareness to the entire country of what information and knowledge resources are available and in which organizations. This coordination will reduce duplication and save money. Ultimately this national activity will drive innovation and the knowledge economy. It aims to support evidence-based policy- and decision-making processes in the country. The centre creates a national sharing network and fora as well as national Communities of Practice and Interest linking these with existing fora country-wide and internationally. It facilitates and supports the endeavours of establishing knowledge management units by the public, non governmental organizations, community based organisations and private sectors. Of importance is to assist all national endeavours towards developing informatics, knowledge management and knowledge economy policies and strategies in the country. The centre is regarded as one of the platforms to launch South Africa into the knowledge economy. The centre creates knowledge transfer partnerships between academic, industry, government and the general public .
SANCIKMKE positions itself to be a first point of call to support government efforts of developing a Bill that will lead to an Act that regulates Information and Knowledge Management in the country. Such an Act will prevent theft of information and knowledge from South Africa to other countries. The centre creates, awareness and stimulate debates and discussions related to informatics, knowledge management and the knowledge economy from all South Africans. This debate is extended to all South Africans including civil society and general members of the community as it is not an academic affair only.
